Organic foods are enjoying a bit of a renaissance worldwide with trends moving towards more natural, healthier products, and wine is no exception. As this wine growing method is becoming more refined, organic wines are exhibiting stronger flavors and distinctive characteristics.

By definition, organic wine is made from grapes that follow the rules of organic farming, meaning they’ve been grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. It deals mainly with the grape growing, although the winemaking process has become increasingly organic as well.

To bear the USDA organic seal, wine also must show who the certifying agency is, and all organic claims must be stated on the label. An organic wine cannot have any added sulfites, but it can have naturally occurring sulfites with a total sulfite level of less than 20 parts per million.

If you prefer a more natural growing process from your wines, try any of these five – all American organic wines, all less than $15.

A record low harvest made 2012 a rough year for New Zealand winemakers. 2013 is a different story. Very different. Excitement and optimism reign in the New Zealand wine industry as the prospect of an excellent 2013 vintage gives winemakers the opportunities to restock inventory after last year’s nightmare.

Moonshine. White lightning. Hooch. Mountain dew. Tennessee white whiskey. The names paint a picture, don’t they?

When most of us think of moonshine, we think of illegal whiskey produced in homemade stills in the backwoods and hill country of the south. Poured from unmarked bottles and jars, this whiskey would make you wince and set your throat on fire. Actually, this depiction of moonshine isn’t necessarily inaccurate.

Just don’t believe everything you see in the movies and on television. Continue Reading »

In October of 2012 we had brought in a new item called Xairel Vinho Regional Ribatejo. We brought this in because it was an affordable Portuguese red that we all like. Nothing overly special, but very enjoyable. Little did we know that sales would skyrocket. It flew out of here, which was a great thing, but unfortunately our distributor ran out of stock after our first order. If I had a nickel for every customer that had come in looking for it I would have a CRAP-LOAD of nickels. Well, it’s now back in stock and we could be happier. We are putting the bottle on sale for $5.99/bottle and selling the 6-pack case for $30/case. Clearly, the real savings come when you by it by the case. For $30 you are getting a steal!

On Monday we ran a special for the 2009 Cantele Salice Salentino Rosso Riserva, which was rated 3 Glasses by Gambero Rosso. This feature has sold a TON of cases. I guess I underestimated how many people were familiar with Gambero Rosso. As far as I’m concerned that’s a great thing.

Today’s deal is for the 2010 Fattoria Carpoli Sada Integolo Toscana Red IGT. This wine was also rated 3 Glasses by Gambero Rosso, but it was also rated 92pts by the Wine Spectator. Does that make it better than the Cantele? No because they are completely different styles of wine. Cantele is from Southern Sicily and Carpoli is a Super Tuscan. Either way, I’d jump all over this deal. I did a very quick look and didn’t see anyone else stocking this wine. Here’s the review:

“A silky red, with black currant, cherry and spice favors melding effortlessly with the texture and firm structure. Intense and elegant at once, displaying a long aftertaste of fruit and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon and Montepulciano. Best from 2014 through 2025. 3,500 cases made.

Today’s offer is the Anti Napa Chardonnay from Napa. What does that mean? Well, it doesn’t have the big oak to mask the flavor and it is downright affordable and delicious. This is almost a once in a lifetime kind of wine because you get the big Carneros fruit (think stoned fruits) with perfect acidity to match. Seth hates over oaked Chardonnays and primarily drinks French Chardonnays, which age their wine in steel. Granted, that’s not for everyone, either. Big Vine, on the other hand, is aged in stainless steel and neutral French oak. What you get is a perfectly balanced wine with tons of apple and pear notes with a balanced acidity. We just brought it in and have been selling a ton of it. You won’t find any review on this wine, but it’s a Scotty “5-Star” wine. It’s the most underrated Chardonnay for the money.

If you are an Italian Wine Lover then you are familiar with Gambero Rosso. Long story short, when it comes to Italian wines, they are more influential than the Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator combined. They rate their wines on a 1 to 3 glass scale. Less than 5% of the wines receive 3 glasses, which they call “Tre Bicchieri”. Today’s wine was not only rated “Tre Bicchieri” but was also named the “Best Value Under $15”.

Getting right to it, today’s special is for the 2009 Cantele Salice Salentino Rosso Riserva and I’m going to put it on sale for $9.99/bottle. It’s really hard to explain the relationship between the review and the price because some of you might not be familiar with Gambero Rosso. To put it another way, it’s like a WA or WS 98pt wine costing $9.99/bottle. That’s how big a deal it is to get a 3 glass rating. At that price, this wine will fly out of here. Jump on it while you can.
