Most people don’t realize that all beer was organic until the 19th century. In fact, historian Gregg Smith points out that organic beer-like beverages go all the way back to the ancient Mesopotamians, who would store “liquid bread” for later use. But modern organic beer didn’t debut in the United States until the mid-1990s.

The stigma traditionally associated with anything organic – beer included – has always been very average to poor taste. That’s not the case anymore. Aside from being better for your body and better for the environment, modern organic beer tastes pretty darn good, too.

There are two primary levels of certification for organic beer. “100 Percent Organic” is the highest level, brewed completely from organically produced ingredients.

“Organic” is the next level and includes most organic beers. These must be brewed from only 95 percent organically produced ingredients. The other five percent must not be available in organic form.

Ok beer enthusiasts, we just got in the Firestone Reserve Series Sucaba. This beer was rated 100pts by Ratebeer.com and is very hard to get. Sucaba has bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. I know plenty of people who go from store to store and buy as many as they can. That’s not something I would do, but to each his own. It’s only my job to sell it. Happy shopping!

Yesterday we ran a special on the Old Schoolhouse Ruud Awakening IPA. This was a very successful special. We still have a few cases available if you’re interested. When I bought the Ruud Awakening I also bought the remaining cases of the Old Schoolhouse Hooligan Draft Stout, which was rated 96pts by Ratebeer.com. Hooligan Stout is a very full bodied, creamy stout with the characteristic roasted malt and espresso notes. It also has bitterness balanced out by sweet milk chocolate and caramel. This is a beer for all t he stout lovers out there. Like the Ruud IPA, I’m going to put it on sale for $3.99/bottle. This is definitely a beer you should buy by the case.

It never ceases to amaze me how much information our customers get. They know when something is released, which distributor has it and when it’s being delivered. Case in point…Troegs Nugget Nectar. If you’re a beer fan then you know how hard it is to get this beer. Ratebeer.com scored this beer 100pts and it’s usually gone within hours of it being delivered. I just got my cases today and I’ve already had tons of calls for it. Do our customers pay the delivery guy to tell them when it’s delivered and how many cases the retailer gets? The customers know more than me and I order the damn cases. Either way, it’s here and available for purchase.

Due to quantity limitations, we will not “hold” cases for pick-up at a later date. If you want to secure your cases please order online or pick them up in the store. We’ve had a lot of people say they will pick up their cases and never show up, which only hurts the person that is willing to pay upfront.

Everything we get from Firestone Walker Brewery sells out pretty quickly. Of course, that’s not saying much since we only get a few cases here and there. That’s why I always tell people to buy it as soon as they see it. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t listen to me. That equals unhappy customers, which I don’t like but there’s not much I can do about it.

The newest release that just walked in the door is the Firestone Walker Wookey Jack Black Rye IPA. Black IPA’s are on fire and this is the first one from this brewery. Wookey Jack was rated 100pts by Ratebeer.com and I’m going to put it on sale for $6.99/bottle. SUPPLY IS LIMITED! It could sell out in 5 minutes or 5 days. Either way, I wouldn’t wait to order.

I never thought I’d be closing-out anything from Dogfish Head Brewery, but here we are. I’m lowering the price on my last few cases of the Dogfish Head My Antonia. This beer was rated 96pts from Ratebeer.com and given an A- from the Beer Advocate. I’m closing it out for $7.99/bottle. I’m sure beer fans will jump all over these bottles at this price.
